Which Catholic Religious Order Is the Best?

What's the difference between Dominicans, Franciscans, Jesuits, Benedictines, and other Catholic religious orders? And is one religious order better than the others? In this episode of Godsplaining, Fr. Joseph-Anthony and Fr. Bonaventure compare the different religious orders of the Catholic Church, exploring their unique charisms, traditions, and missions. From the contemplative life of monks to the active apostolates of religious priests and brothers, the friars explain why the Church has so many forms of consecrated life and how each reveals something beautiful about following Christ. They also discuss the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, share their personal experiences of discerning the Dominican Order, and offer advice for anyone considering a religious vocation. Could the Shroud of Turin provide scientific evidence for the Resurrection of Jesus Christ? Fr. Gregory Pine, OP, welcomes Fr. Robert Spitzer, SJ, President of the Magis Center of Reason and Faith, to explore one of Christianity's most fascinating mysteries: the Shroud of Turin. Believed by many to be the burial cloth of Jesus, the Shroud has fascinated scientists, historians, and believers for centuries. But what does the scientific evidence actually reveal? Fr. Spitzer examines the controversial 1988 carbon dating, the mysterious three-dimensional image, the bloodstains that appear to correspond to the Gospel accounts of Christ's crucifixion, and theories about how the image may have formed. Together, they explore whether the Shroud points beyond natural explanations and what it might tell us about the Resurrection. Is it okay to be sad as a Christian? If we have faith in God, shouldn't we always be joyful? In this episode of Godsplaining, Fr. Gregory and Fr. Joseph-Anthony explore the relationship between sadness, Christian joy, and holiness. Drawing on the wisdom of St. Thomas Aquinas, they discuss why sadness isn't necessarily a bad thing, how to respond to sorrow, and why experiencing difficult emotions doesn't make you a bad Christian. From grief and disappointment to persistent sadness, the friars offer practical and spiritual insights on finding peace through friendship, patience, prayer, and the presence of Christ. What happens when a society abandons objective moral truth? C.S. Lewis warned that the consequences could be far greater than we imagine. In The Abolition of Man, C.S. Lewis argues that when we reduce morality to personal feelings and treat human nature as something we can reshape at will, we risk losing the very qualities that make us human. In this episode of Godsplaining, Fr. Patrick and Fr. Bonaventure unpack Lewis’ influential work and explore its implications for modern education, moral relativism, natural law, and human freedom. What if the secret to a meaningful life isn't getting everything you want, but learning what you're willing to sacrifice? In this episode of Guestsplaining, Fr. Gregory welcomes Jonathan Pageau, artist, symbolic thinker, and creator of The Symbolic World, for a conversation about sacrifice, modern storytelling, and the Christian understanding of happiness. Why does modern culture struggle to understand sacrifice? What can Spider-Man, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, and the multiverse teach us about vulnerability, freedom, and the longing for home? And why does Christianity insist that self-giving, rather than self-fulfillment, is the path to a meaningful life? Tune in to hear them explore the symbolism of sacrifice in contemporary cinema, the limits of endless possibilities, and how accepting the particular circumstances of our lives can lead us toward God. What do Barbie, Lady Bird, and Little Women have in common? And what can Greta Gerwig's films tell us about her upcoming adaptation of C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia? In this episode of Godsplaining, Fr. Patrick and Fr. Gregory explore the work of filmmaker Greta Gerwig through a Catholic lens, examining the surprising ways her films reveal truths about identity, love, relationships, and the human condition. From the search for belonging in Lady Bird to the complexities of womanhood in Little Women and the encounter with reality in Barbie, the friars discuss Gerwig's ability to portray life with honesty, curiosity, and an appreciation for its beautiful messiness. They also explore the role of faith and Catholic education in Lady Bird, the recurring theme of homecoming in Gerwig's storytelling, and what her approach to character development might bring to the world of Narnia. Are we beginning to treat people more like things? In this episode of Godsplaining, Fr. Bonaventure and Joseph-Anthony explore the thought of Jewish philosopher Martin Buber and his influential work I and Thou. Buber argues that we encounter the world through two fundamental relationships: “I–It,” in which we experience and use things, and “I–Thou,” in which we encounter another person in genuine relationship. What happens when the world of “It” begins to take over? The friars discuss Buber’s concern about the growing tendency to reduce people to their usefulness, why love requires freedom and choice, and how our relationship with God reveals a radically different way of encountering reality. What does the Catholic Church actually teach about the final judgment and why do we hear so little about it? Fr. Gregory welcomes theologian, author, and President of Renewal Ministries Dr. Ralph Martin back to Godsplaining for a conversation about his book The Coming Judgment. Together, they explore the Second Coming, the reality of hell, salvation, repentance, Scripture, discernment, and what it means to live with genuine Christian hope. Dr. Martin explains why Christians should neither obsess over predicting the end times nor ignore Christ’s warnings about judgment. Instead, Catholics are called to remain close to Jesus, take His words seriously, and live in preparation for the day when each of us will stand before Him. The conversation also examines why recovering confidence in Sacred Scripture matters, how daily prayer helps us recognize the voice of God, why judgment can actually be a source of hope, and the danger of creating a version of Jesus who simply confirms what we already want to believe. Martial arts can cultivate discipline, courage, strength, and preparedness—but what happens when fighting becomes entertainment? In this episode of Godsplaining, Fr. Gregory and Fr. Joseph-Anthony wrestle with the morality of combat sports, including MMA and boxing. Is there a legitimate place for violence and aggression in the Christian life? How are self-defense and martial arts different from fighting for spectacle? And should Christians be concerned about entertainment built around watching one person physically harm another? The friars discuss virtue, courage, self-defense, the history of combat sports, the discipline found in martial arts, and the potential physical and spiritual dangers of turning violence into entertainment. Is watching UFC or MMA morally different from watching other sports? When does athletic competition become blood sport? And what does our attraction to violent spectacle do to us as viewers? Why has Brideshead Revisited endured as one of the great Catholic novels? Fr. Patrick and Fr. Bonaventure dive into Evelyn Waugh’s masterpiece and its unforgettable exploration of grace, conversion, sin, beauty, Catholic culture, and God’s relentless pursuit of the human heart. From Charles Ryder’s encounter with the Flyte family to Sebastian’s struggles, Julia’s conversion, and Lord Marchmain’s powerful final moments, Brideshead Revisited portrays a God who continues to draw His children back to Himself, even when they resist Him. The friars discuss their favorite characters and scenes, the novel’s depiction of Catholic life, and what Waugh’s famous “twitch upon the thread” reveals about the mysterious workings of grace. What does Divine Mercy really mean, and why is it so central to the Christian life? Fr. Chris Alar, MIC, joins Fr. Gregory to unpack the message of Divine Mercy, the extraordinary life of St. Faustina, and the profound connection between God’s mercy and the sacraments. Fr. Alar is a priest of the Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception and serves as provincial superior for the congregation’s province. A prominent teacher and evangelist of the Divine Mercy message, he is also the author of Understanding Divine Mercy and Understanding the Sacraments. In this episode, Fr. Alar explains why Divine Mercy goes to the very heart of the Gospel message. He and Fr. Gregory discuss what it means to call mercy God’s “greatest attribute,” the relationship between the Sacred Heart and Divine Mercy, and the rich symbolism contained in the Divine Mercy image. They also explore some of St. Faustina’s extraordinary experiences, the authority Christ entrusted to priests in the Sacrament of Confession, and the remarkable promise associated with Divine Mercy Sunday. Can any sin be greater than God’s mercy? What’s the difference between trusting in mercy and presuming upon it? And what does Jesus desire to accomplish in us through Divine Mercy? How should Catholics think about mental health? Is anxiety or depression primarily a psychological issue, a spiritual struggle—or can it be both? In this episode of Godsplaining, Fr. Gregory and Fr. Bonaventure discuss the relationship between faith, therapy, psychology, and mental health. They explore why psychological struggles are real without defining the whole person, when it may be appropriate to seek professional help, the role of spiritual direction and Christian community, and why psychological and spiritual health should be integrated rather than confused. They also consider a difficult reality: sometimes healing doesn't happen in the way we hope. What does the Christian life look like when a struggle must be managed rather than completely resolved? In fact, having certain non-negotiable commitments can free us from constantly having to decide what matters most. The friars discuss why Sunday Mass should be a question of when—not whether—why even a less-than-ideal Mass is still worth attending, how worship gives God what He is due, and why the Mass provides a foundation for the entire week. They also explore what can be lost in being “spiritual but not religious,” the importance of worshiping as a community, and the surprising freedom that comes from allowing our lives to be ordered toward God. Fr. Bonaventure welcomes Fr. Timothy Gallagher, OMV, back to Godsplaining for a conversation about St. Ignatius of Loyola and the discernment of spirits. How do we recognize what is drawing us toward God, and what is pulling us away? How should we respond when we experience discouragement, confusion, anxiety, or spiritual desolation? What role should our emotions play in the spiritual life? Drawing from his latest book Thinking Like a Saint: Discernment of Spirits in the Catholic Tradition, Fr. Gallagher explains St. Ignatius’ practical rules for discernment and how they can help Catholics move from simply reacting to their interior experiences to understanding and responding to them. Fr. Gallagher also explains why Ignatian discernment isn’t uniquely Ignatian in its substance, but is deeply rooted in the broader Catholic spiritual tradition, including the wisdom of St. Teresa of Avila, St. Francis de Sales, St. John of the Cross, St. Thomas Aquinas, and others. Listen and learn how to become more attentive to the movements of your heart, recognize the action of the good spirit and the enemy, and live with greater spiritual freedom. Joseph-Anthony take on some of today’s most common “toxic traits” and pair them with the Saints who show us a better way. They tackle everything from narcissism and holding grudges to ghosting, impulsivity, FOMO, and gaslighting. As shown through the lives of the Saints, the friars clarify that holiness doesn’t entail losing your personality. What do you do when you've been genuinely hurt by someone in the Catholic Church? What if a therapist, friend, or loved one tells you that leaving the Church is the answer? In this episode of Godsplaining, Fr. Gregory and Fr. Bonaventure discuss church hurt, trauma, abuse, forgiveness, and the difficult distinction between the holiness of the Church and the failures of her members. The friars explore why Catholics shouldn't dismiss real experiences of pain or mistreatment, why the failures of priests and other Catholics don't negate Christ's promises to His Church, and how someone who has been hurt can begin to heal without abandoning the faith. During their discussion they offer practical advice for Catholics struggling to return to a parish or trust Church leaders again—including when it may be appropriate to create space, attend another parish, seek professional and spiritual guidance, and allow healing to unfold over time. What does forgiveness require? Does forgiveness always mean reconciliation? And can God bring something new out of even our deepest wounds? Why are more people cutting off family members, friends, and loved ones? What does the rise of “no contact” reveal about the way we understand relationships? Fr. Gregory sits down with Ethics and Public Policy Center Fellow and author Noelle Mering to explore the growing phenomenon of fractured relationships. They discuss the influence of social media and therapy-speak, the meaning of “toxic” and “traumatic,” our increasing discomfort with disagreement, and the temptation to treat relationships like online spaces that can simply be blocked, muted, or unfollowed. Noelle and Fr. Gregory also consider how politics and ideology can reshape our understanding of family, obligation, and identity—and why Christian faith offers a radically different vision of love: one rooted in relationship, responsibility, forgiveness, and the dignity of the person in front of us. Why do Catholics, and Thomists in particular, have such a problem with René Descartes? Fr. Bonaventure and Fr. Patrick Briscoe take another look at one of the most controversial figures in modern philosophy. From “I think, therefore I am” and the mind-body problem to Descartes’ Catholic faith and surprising Augustinian influences, they ask whether the father of modern philosophy deserves his reputation. Why are so many Christians rediscovering the Catholic Church? In this episode of Guestsplaining, Fr. Gregory Pine sits down with Catholic apologist Trent Horn to discuss Protestantism, apologetics, conversion, and what ultimately draws people into the fullness of the Catholic faith. They explore why arguments matter, but also why arguments alone are never enough. Trent explains the biggest misconceptions Protestants have about Catholicism, how apologetics should lead to deeper discipleship, and why every convert must eventually move beyond debates into a life of prayer, the sacraments, and authentic friendship with Christ. Whether you're Catholic, Protestant, exploring Christianity, or simply curious about the differences, this conversation offers a thoughtful and charitable look at one of today's most important religious conversations. The Catholic Mass is far more than just a weekly obligation—it is the Church's highest act of worship and our deepest encounter with Jesus Christ. Yet many Catholics know the responses and rituals without fully understanding why the liturgy unfolds the way it does. In this episode of Godsplaining, Fr. Joseph-Anthony and Fr. Gregory offer a guided tour through the Mass, explaining how each part prepares us for communion with Christ. Beginning with the Introductory Rites, they show how the liturgy gradually moves us from ordinary life into sacred worship through prayer, Scripture, and finally sacrifice. Along the way, they unpack the meaning of our postures, the purpose of the Liturgy of the Word, the significance of the Offertory, and the beauty of the Eucharistic Prayer. Drawing from St. Thomas Aquinas, Roman Catholic liturgical tradition, and their own pastoral experience, they explain how every prayer and gesture helps believers enter more deeply into the mystery of Christ's sacrifice. As Fr. Joseph-Anthony points out during the episode "lex orandi, lex credendi; the law of prayer, is the law of belief." Whether you've attended Mass your entire life or are just beginning to explore the Catholic faith, this conversation will help you see the liturgy with fresh eyes and participate with greater devotion. Fr. Gregory sits down with Fr. Donald Calloway, MIC, author of the bestselling Consecration to St. Joseph, to explore why devotion to St. Joseph has exploded around the world, and why it may be exactly what the Church needs today. From authentic masculinity and fatherhood to trust in God's providence, Fr. Calloway shares how St. Joseph became the model of faithful discipleship, silent strength, and spiritual protection. In conversation, they also explore why St. Joseph is called the "Terror of Demons," how his hidden life shaped Jesus' humanity, and why millions of Catholics have embraced consecration to him. Whether you're already devoted to St. Joseph or just beginning to discover him, this conversation offers practical wisdom for growing in holiness, confidence, and trust in God. What does the Bible really say about headship and submission in marriage? Few passages generate more debate than Ephesians 5. Does St. Paul teach male domination—or something entirely different? In the latest episode of Godsplaining, Fr. Gregory and Fr. Joseph-Anthony unpack one of Scripture's most misunderstood texts, exploring what the Church teaches regarding headship, mutual submission, sacrifice, and love. Rather than a struggle for power, they argue that Christian marriage is rooted in Christ's self-giving love for the Church. Headship is not about control, but about sacrificial service. Likewise, mutual submission is not about inequality, but about each spouse giving themselves fully for the good of the other. Whether you've wrestled with this passage for years or are hearing it for the first time, this conversation offers a thoughtful Catholic perspective grounded in Scripture and the Church's tradition. Most people instinctively say that lying is wrong—until they're presented with an extreme case. What if a murderer came to your door? What if hiding the truth could protect an innocent person? In this episode of Godsplaining, Fr. Gregory and Fr. Bonaventure explore traditional Christian teaching on lying, drawing from St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, and even Immanuel Kant. They discuss why truthfulness is so central to the moral life, whether every lie is sinful, and how Catholics should think about difficult situations where telling the truth seems costly. The conversation goes beyond rules and exceptions to ask a deeper question: Do you want to be the kind of person who tells the truth? "Jesus died for our sins." As Christians we know this to be true, but do we understand what this really means? There are many explanations that focus on punishment, debt, or substitution. But how does the Catholic Church understand Christ's sacrifice on the Cross? Join Fr. Gregory and Fr. Bonaventure on this episode of Godsplaining as they explore the Catholic understanding of atonement, the mystery of salvation, and why Catholics speak of participation in the divine life. Along the way, they'll also discuss the famous Protestant theory of penal substitution, St. Thomas Aquinas' approach to redemption, and how Christ's suffering reveals the deepest truth about God's love. The Catholic Church and AI: Pope Leo's First Encyclical Explained In this installment of Godsplaining Reacts, Fr. Patrick unpacks Pope Leo XIV’s first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, an in-depth reflection on artificial intelligence, technology, truth, work, power, and the dignity of the human person. More than merely “the AI encyclical,” Fr. Patrick argues that Magnifica Humanitas is fundamentally about anthropology: who are we and what are we for? Drawing from Scripture, Catholic social teaching, and the Christian understanding of transcendence, Fr. Patrick sheds light on the Church’s engagement with technology, from the Vatican’s Minerva Dialogues to recent teachings on AI ethics and digital life. As it turns out, the most serious challenge with AI is not technological, but spiritual. What questions do you have regarding Magnifica Humanitas? What does it mean to "win" Lent, or the Christian life for that matter? Fr. Patrick, Fr. Gregory, and Fr. Joseph-Anthony explore the deeper meaning of Lent, spiritual growth, perseverance, and Christian courage during a live recording at St. Mary of the Assumption in Brookline, MA with local young adults. Drawing on insights from Thomas Aquinas, Scripture, and pastoral experience, the friars reveal how prayer, fasting, and almsgiving shape the Christian life — not just during Lent, but throughout our entire earthly pilgrimage. This episode of Godsplaining takes on one of the most difficult and important issues facing the Church today: the clerical sexual abuse crisis. Fr. Gregory and Fr. Patrick begin by grounding the conversation in a theology of the priesthood. Priests are not merely “like everyone else”—they are entrusted with a unique gift and responsibility. Because of this, the faithful rightly expect more from them. When priests fail, the wound is deeper precisely because the gift is greater. The friars emphasize that abuse is not something to excuse or minimize. It represents a profound betrayal of trust, of vocation, and of Christ’s mission. The pain and outrage people feel are not misplaced; they reflect a real recognition of the dignity of the priesthood and the gravity of its violation. This episode is a sober reflection on how the Church can confront sin without losing sight of grace. In this episode, Fr. Gregory Pine and Fr. Patrick Briscoe tackle a question that often sparks confusion and controversy: Do Christians and Muslims worship the same God? They begin by grounding the discussion in both contemporary debates and historical Church teaching, showing that this is not a new question but one the Church has addressed for centuries. Drawing from sources like St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Robert Bellarmine, and the Second Vatican Council, they explain that the Catholic tradition consistently affirms that Muslims and Christians do, in fact, worship the one true God. The friars clarify that while Christians and Muslims refer to the same God in reality (the one Creator), they do not share the same understanding of God. Watch the full episode to learn more. This episode of Godsplaining dives into the thought of Søren Kierkegaard—one of the most influential Christian philosophers of the modern era and often called the “father of existentialism.” Fr. Bonaventure and Fr. Joseph-Anthony explore how Kierkegaard pushed back against overly rational approaches to Christianity, especially those influenced by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (checkout our episode on Hegel, if you haven't already). While Hegel emphasized reason as the key to understanding reality and faith, Kierkegaard insisted that faith cannot be reduced to logic alone. The episode unpacks Kierkegaard’s famous framework of the three stages of life: The Aesthetic Stage: a life driven by pleasure, beauty, and experience The Ethical Stage: a life grounded in moral duty and universal truths The Religious Stage: a life of radical faith, where one responds personally to God Through works like Either/Or and Fear and Trembling, Kierkegaard shows that true faith goes beyond rules and reason. Using the story of Abraham, he introduces the idea of a “teleological suspension of the ethical”—that God’s call can transcend human logic, requiring trust even when we don’t fully understand.
