Why Years of Personal Development Haven’t Changed Your Patterns (and What Will), with Alena Candova | #654
Epizodai
Have you ever understood a pattern in yourself perfectly well, and still found yourself repeating it? Perhaps you have invested years in therapy, coaching or spiritual practice, and yet the same things keep coming back: the perfectionism, the people-pleasing, the need to stay in control. The missing piece may not be in the mind at all, but in the nervous system. In this conversation, I speak with Alena Candova about why so many of our patterns were born in childhood to protect us, and why lasting change begins with self-compassion rather than self-criticism. Alena shares the moment on a silent retreat in Bali when she was asked to turn love towards herself, and broke. In this episode, you’ll discover how to: Understand why recognising your limiting patterns isn’t enough to change them, and how the state of your nervous system shapes your everyday behaviour. Build a more compassionate relationship with perfectionism, people-pleasing and other protective patterns, by getting curious about what they were originally trying to do for you. Start a simple daily practice of conscious breathing, body awareness and curiosity, even two minutes at a time, to create space for deeper self-understanding and lasting growth. Press play, and notice what begins to shift when you stop fighting your patterns and start listening to them. ˚ KEY POINTS AND TIMESTAMPS: 03:24 - Why understanding a pattern isn’t enough to change it 05:24 - Your pattern was born to protect you 08:15 - Why change starts in the nervous system 11:18 - The Bali retreat and the struggle with self-love 15:22 - Do we need big breakthroughs to change? 18:38 - Three steps to working with your nervous system 22:07 - A simple daily breathing practice 25:50 - How to integrate realisations into everyday life 27:59 - Personal development, self-compassion and final thoughts ˚ MEMORABLE QUOTE: “When we are hard on ourselves, our brain cannot learn.” ˚ VALUABLE RESOURCES: Connect with Alena at sattvaintegralhealth.com ˚ Coaching with Agi: https://personaldevelopmentmasterypodcast.com/mentor ˚ 🎙️ Want to be a guest on Personal Development Mastery? What if the biggest act of self-betrayal isn’t the major life decisions, but the tiny, daily moments where you stop choosing yourself? A moment from the podcast archive that I felt deserved to be heard again. My guest Becca Eve Young, former corporate strategist turned transformational coach and author of It’s Gonna Get Messy, shares why self-doubt is the inevitable result of ditching the script society handed you, and the surprisingly simple practice of micro-trusts that rebuilds your self-confidence from the inside out. “You can’t slow down. You can’t afford to slow down.” That was the voice in Dr Jessica Houston’s head for years. From the outside, she looked successful. On the inside, she was carrying far more than anyone could see: the fear of ever being broke again, the need to be liked, and a habit of saying yes to everyone except herself. Perhaps you know that voice too. Many high achievers do. It tells you that slowing down is risky, that saying no will make people think less of you, and that the moment you reach the top of one mountain, the next one is already waiting. And because we hear it every day, we rarely stop to ask whether it is actually telling us the truth. In this conversation, Jessica and I explore how to hear what we are really telling ourselves, how to challenge it, and how to build success that supports your life rather than competes with it. In this episode, you’ll discover how to: Recognise the hidden beliefs behind overachievement, people-pleasing and the pressure to keep proving yourself, so you can make decisions based on what truly matters to you. Challenge recurring negative thoughts by writing them down, questioning their accuracy and coaching yourself through difficult moments, instead of letting rejection or self-doubt dictate your actions. Create a sustainable self-care practice and set healthier boundaries, so you can protect your energy, reduce overwhelm and pursue meaningful growth without sacrificing your wellbeing. What if the most important action you take today happens before you do anything at all? For 650 episodes, I have kept returning to one word: mastery. In episode 150, I saw it as a journey. In episode 550, I described three aspects of it: mind mastery, flow mastery and living mastery. For this milestone, I return to the story of the Chinese bamboo tree from episode 400 and look at it from below the ground, where something quieter has been growing all along. * Discover why awareness is the root beneath mind, flow and living mastery, and why it is so hard to master what we do not notice. * Try three simple invitations to practise this week: find the moment, listen to the signal and make the choice. Have you ever felt that, despite doing everything right, something is missing? That you're successful on paper, and still flat inside? My guest today is Jon Symes, who has spent over 20 years helping leaders and midlife men see the invisible stories running quietly beneath their choices. Stories about success, love, safety and masculinity, absorbed so early in life that we mistake them for truth rather than recognising them as the belief structures they actually are. As Jon puts it, most of our stories arrived with us in disguise. We explore where these stories come from, childhood moments, family patterns, culture, the heroes we watched on screen as boys, and why simply seeing the pattern is often not enough to change it. Jon shares the practical work of finding a story, understanding where it took root, and choosing differently for the next chapter of your life. A simple question you can ask yourself right now to uncover the belief quietly shaping how you define success, love and safety Why the same problem keeps resurfacing in different disguises, and how to find the story underneath that makes your behaviour make complete sense A different perspective on masculinity, initiation and what it means to hold power in service of life rather than ego Press play, and give yourself the space to look honestly at the stories you've been living by. ˚ KEY POINTS AND TIMESTAMPS: 02:49 - Jon's Bow-Legged Walk: A Story from Age 10 05:46 - Leaving a Successful Career to Serve the Common Good 09:02 - The Sentence That Reveals Your Belief Structure 12:15 - Why the Same Problem Keeps Coming Back 17:33 - Why Seeing the Story Isn't Always Enough to Change It 23:38 - The Stories Men Are Taught About Masculinity 24:26 - The Lost Process of Male Initiation 29:47 - Trustworthy Power and What Men Are Protecting 30:47 - Writing an Initiation Letter to Your 18-Year-Old Self 34:54 - Where to Find Jon and Closing Thoughts ˚ MEMORABLE QUOTE: "Most of our stories arrived with us in disguise." ˚ VALUABLE RESOURCES: Jon's website: https://jonsymes.com ˚ Coaching with Agi: https://personaldevelopmentmasterypodcast.com/mentor ˚ 🎙️ Want to be a guest on Personal Development Mastery? How much of your day do you actually choose, and how much simply happens to you? Most of us move through much of our day without truly choosing it. Our habits, our emotions, our beliefs, they shape how we react long before we've had a chance to think it through. The real challenge, I find, isn't knowing this happens. It's catching it as it happens, and then choosing, deliberately, a response that actually serves us. In this episode, Alan Bodnar, author of The Self-Driving You, walks us through how the brain's automatic and conscious systems work together, and why deliberate attention is the key to interrupting the patterns that don't serve us. He also shares how he uses mindfulness, not as relaxation, but as mental training, to strengthen our ability to stay present and respond rather than react. You'll discover how to: Recognise when your thoughts, emotions and behaviour are being driven by autopilot rather than by choice. Use deliberate attention and your breath to interrupt automatic reactions, particularly in moments of stress or frustration. Build genuine self-awareness and self-control through consistent mental training and practice. Listen to the full episode to learn how to recognise your autopilot, take the wheel more often, and gradually retrain your mind towards greater balance and better choices. ˚ KEY POINTS AND TIMESTAMPS: 0:00 - Introduction and Meet Alan Bodnar 1:56 - Finding the Discipline to Write While Working Full-Time 6:03 - The Self-Driving Car Metaphor and Dual Process Theory 10:34 - Activating the Conscious Driver Through Attention 16:07 - Mindfulness as Mental Training and the Breath as a Brake 23:04 - Why Old Habits Aren't Personal 27:18 - Where to Find Alan and His Book 28:54 - Closing Reflections on Taking the Wheel 32:55 - Recap and Call to Action ˚ MEMORABLE QUOTE: "Where attention goes, neural patterns grow." ˚ VALUABLE RESOURCES: Alan's website: https://www.theselfdrivingyou.com/ ˚ Coaching with Agi: https://personaldevelopmentmasterypodcast.com/mentor ˚ 🎙️ Want to be a guest on Personal Development Mastery? Have you ever hit every target on your own scoreboard and still felt like something was missing? That was David Gottfried's reality after four decades of success by every conventional measure. David is the man who turned green building into a global standard now used in 85 countries, and yet all that achievement left him asking a harder question: what actually makes a life well lived? In this episode, David introduces a framework built around three kinds of worth: net worth, self-worth, and soul worth, and shares why the usual measures of success can never tell the whole story on their own. Discover the three kinds of worth, and why soul worth may be the one missing from your own definition of success. Use David's simple deposits-and-depletions exercise to see what feeds your soul and what is quietly draining it. Reflect on whether the life you are living today is the life you would want people to describe when you are no longer here. What if the thing you've spent your whole career chasing was never going to give you peace of mind? Steve Barton built his floral business to two million dollars in revenue. He had the numbers, the outcome, everything that was supposed to add up to a good life. And still, something was missing. That gap is where this conversation begins. Steve shares how he moved from a life run by constant thinking into a life shaped by awareness and presence, and what changed for him as a result. After my last episode, where I shared my experience of returning to a 10-day Vipassana retreat for the second time, I felt drawn to share something different. This comes from episode #267, when I first discovered Vipassana meditation. I shared the teaching behind it: why we react the way we do to life's difficulties, why the usual ways we try to find relief don't fully work, and what really does. This explanation is based on the teachings of S.N. Goenka, the teacher who established these non-commercial Vipassana meditation centres around the world. I felt this piece deserved to stand on its own, so here it is, exactly as I shared it back then. If you want the fuller story, my own personal experience of that first retreat, you will find it in episode #267: https://personaldevelopmentmasterypodcast.com/267 Send us a text Support the show Subscribe to our weekly email: https://personaldevelopmentmasterypodcast.com/email --- A personal development podcast for midlife professionals, offering mindset tips and practical tools for personal growth, self mastery, personal mastery, and purposeful living. "I wish I could bottle that smile." That's what my partner said to me when the silence finally broke, after 10 days. This is the third chapter of a story that began in 2022. I just completed my second 10-day silent retreat. In this episode, I share with vulnerability the rollercoaster of those ten days: the resistance of day one, the release of day four, the wall I hit on day nine, and the realisation that changed how I see my own podcast, my own mission, and the gap between what we do and why we really do it. Whether or not you ever sit in silence for ten days yourself, this episode will ask you the same question it asked me: what is your true volition behind what you do? What if the clarity you need for a difficult decision depends less on the decision itself and more on the state of awareness you are making it from? When you are under pressure, stressed, angry, uncertain, or caught in transition, your mind can contract and make your options feel limited. In this episode, my guest Richard Smith explores how your level of awareness shapes your thinking, your reactions, and your ability to respond with wisdom rather than impulse. Through his Orbits of Consciousness framework, he offers a practical way to understand why some decisions feel heavy and confusing, while others come from a place of calm, connection, and clarity. You will discover: How to distinguish between mindset and awareness so you can better understand where your thoughts and reactions are coming from. Why stress, fear, anger, and resentment can pull you into “lower orbits” of consciousness and reduce your ability to see options clearly.
